Synopsis
The short film ‘Empowering Change’ features Faduma, a determined woman from Somaliland, who shares her personal story and efforts to stop the practice of FGC (Female Genital Circumcision). Faduma was recently awarded the Victorian Multicultural Award for excellence for her work assisting women affected by this practice. The film seeks opinions of women born in the North African region affected by FGC, their assertion for future generations to be free from FGC is paramount. This film raises insight into the complexities for women refugees and immigrants, residing in Australia who have experienced FGC. The need for advocacy and education about the health impacts of FGC becomes apparent and highlights the intrinsic work of Southern Health, within this field. This film celebrates diversity and multiculturalism whilst challenges FGC practice with a persuasive personalised story. *
